Bill was an only child, born August 30, 1928 in Woodland, MI to parents Carl and Vera Hewitt. Bill helped out around the family farm, played high school basketball and graduated from Woodland High School in 1946. William married the love of his life, Elaine J.(Cotant) on March 31, 1951, in Hastings. Bill enlisted in the Army, serving in Germany during the Korean War. William, Elaine and their family resided in Lansing, in the early 1950s, Grand Ledge from 1956 -1985, and moved to Hastings in 1985. Bill worked at General Motors inLansing form 1948-1983 (35 years), while raising his family, and maintaining a small farm in rural Grand Lede. In 1964, while working at G.M. and maintaining the farm, Bill also built their new home on Maple Street Street in Grand Ledge, where the family resided, before he and Elaine moved to Hastings in 1985.They spent 26+ retirement years between Zephyrhills, FL. and their farm in Hastings, where he grew raspberries and other produce, which they wold sell at markets in Battle Creek and Hastings. They relocated to Sentinel Pointe retirements Community of Grand Rapids in the summer of 2017. Bill enjoyed fishing, shuffleboard, golf, participating in bowling and softball leagues, spending time with his children and grandchildren, playing Euchre, and tending to his large garden. Bill was a wonderfully, loving husband to Elaine for 67 years. He loved God, his wife, family and friends. Bill was hard-working; a pleasant and gentle man, known by most as kind and good natured William is survived by his three children, Charlene (Skip) Tompkins, Marilyn (Larry) Murphy, and Douglas Hewitt, as well as by his nine grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elaine; his son-in-law, Skip and his great grandchild (Aiden Hewitt). Visitation was held until the time of services on Friday Jan. 28, 2022 at Lauer Family Funeral Home, 1401 North Broadway Street, Hastings, Michigan 49058, followed by interment in Woodland Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the charity of your choice.
