She was 91 and had been in declining health since late last years. Although she lived some 60 years on a farm outside Lake Odessa, Mrs. Heyboer was adventurous, curious and engaged in the larger world. She was born on Nov. 24, 1926, to Wesleyan Methodist missionaries near Bombay, India. Educated at a boarding school in the Himalayas, she crossed the Pacific on a troop ship during World War II as she headed to the U.S. for college. Mrs.Heyboer graduated from Houghton College in upstate New York in 1945 and later earned her master's at Michigan State University. She married a Grand Rapids Dutchman, Alvin Heyboer, in 1951. they lived in Grandville before moving several years later to the farm outside Lake Odessa. Mrs. Heyboer was a first grade teacher in the Lake wood school system for 32 years. She was an extraordinary teacher who created special traditions such as taking kids to the Dairy Queen on their birthdays. She was passionate about helping children become good readers, believing this would not only facilitate all the learning that was to come, but enrich them personally. Mrs. Heyboer kept up with the news and politics, was active in church activities and was a big fan of the Detroit Tigers. She was a member of South Boston Bible Church in Lowell. She loved to travel and had been to Israel, Egypt and China, as well as back to India She was the heart of her family and lived her life with faith empathy, creativity and gratitude. Her husband died of cancer in 1994. Mrs. Heyboer is survived by a daughter, Linda H.Lamb of Columbia, S.C.; two sons, Joe and Mark Heyboer, both of Lake Odessa; two grandsons, Casey Lamb (Wendy) of Greenville, S.C., and Brady Lamb of Columbia, SC.; a great-grandson Logan Lamb of Greenville, S.C.; a sister and brother-in-law,Helen and Ivan Syswerda of Fremont; several nieces and nephews and a circle of friends. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 27, 2021 at Koops Funeral Chapel, 935 4th Ave., Lake Odessa, Mi, 48849 from 11 a.m until time of funeral at 1 p.m. Burial will take place privately at Lakeside Cemetery.
