Hickey, former Ionia merchant, who was born and who lived most of his life in Ionia county, died suddenly in Grand Rapids, following a brief illness. He is well known in the county and had a host of friends who held him in highest esteem. The funeral was held from St. Andrew’s Cathedral at Grand Rapids, on Monday, November 23, and was largely attended by members of the Holy Name society, of which he was a member, also the Hibernians Court of Honor societies and employes of the Pere Marquette Shops. Friends and relatives from Toledo, Durand, Chicago, Ionia, Fowler, Pewamo and Hubbardston were in attendance. Mr. Hickey entered the grocery business in Ionia at the age of 18 years. He purchased an establishment and did business under the name of J.C. and L. Hickey, now occupied by F.S. Loree, at the corner of Main and Mill streets. In June, 1903, he married Miss Catherine Cunningham of Grand Rapids. He moved to Grand Rapids from Ionia in 1906, taking a position with the Pere Marquette shops as traveling representative. He is survived by his widow and four children, John, Jr., 20; Everett, 18; Helen, 16, and James, 12; four sisters, Mrs. M. Sheehan and Mrs. Lucy Fox of Ionia, Mrs. E. Kelley of Grand Rapids, and Mrs. Anna Hickey of Toledo.
