Died at her home near Berlin Centre, December 6th 1905. When a small child she moved with her parents to Niagara county New York, where on May 6th, 1855, she was married to William Hicking. They moved to Michigan in 1858 and settled on the farm where they resided at the time of her death. Mr. Hicking was one of the several Berlin township pioneers who enlisted in the Union army during the civil war, and during his absence Mrs. Hicking bore faithfully and well the part played by so many of the wives and mothers, who fought as great battles at home as the husbands and fathers fought upon southern battle fields. Mrs. Hicking was the mother of five children, Nelson, who died at the age of five; Arzie, who died when eight years of age; Sarah A., now the wife of Chas. Bailey, of Ionia; Mary A., now Mrs. Bradford, of Ionia; and Grace C., who is the wife of Geo. Aldrich, and lives on the old homestead. These three daughters, with the husband and father, two sisters, a brother and several grandchildren and near relatives are left to mourn. Mrs. Hicking united with the M. E. Church at Berlin center soon after the war and for forty years was a faithful member and even before this time was a devoted Christian. Her patience and fortitude were an inspiration and help to all with whom she associated. We are the poorer and heaven is the richer for her going. The funeral was conducted by her pastor, the Rev. Don O. Colgrove, at the Berlin Center Methodist Episcopal church. Interment at the Balcom cemetery.
