He was born in Ionia on July 8, 1894, the son of John and Gazella Clark Hicks. He graduated from Ionia High School with the class of 1914, joined the National Guard in 1916, and saw service on the Mexican border. When the U.S. entered World War I, he was sent to France as a member of 126th infantry Regiment of the 32nd “Red Arrow” Division. An army musician, he was assigned to the Army Medical Corps and served as a corpsman when not playing the tuba. He saw service in both in France and Germany and was wounded September 2, 1918. After his return from service, he married Ferne L. Howe on June 2, 1921, in Ionia. They were lifelong residents of the Ionia area. His wife preceded him in death on November 16, 1979. Since that time, he made his home with a grandson and granddaughter in law, Kim and Lori Grant of Ionia. He was a bookkeeper for Berger Motor Sales for many years. He as a member of the First Christian Church; a life member of the Masonic Lodge F & A.M. 36 of Ionia; the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Post 429 of Saranac; the Elks Lodge, No 548 of Ionia; the American Legion, Post 37; and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 3732 of Ionia. He was a former commander and member of the World War I Barracks Post No. 1362, and a longtime member of the Banner Grange. He was one of the last remaining members of a Last Man’s Club formed by his army unit following World War I. The club met annually until 1979, when only five members remained and some of those were too ill to attend. It is believed that Bob was the last surviving member. He is survived by one daughter, Jan Burnett, of Miami, Fla.; one son, Robert, of Honolulu, Hawaii; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday noon from the First Christian Church, with the Rev. F. Michael Valentine officiating. Burial will be in Tuttle Cemetery. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. The casket will be open from 11 a.m. Saturday until service begins at noon. A memorials has been established for the First Christian Church in care of the Montgomery-Leddick Funeral home, which is handling the arrangements.
