Born on Aug. 28, 1926 to Mr. and Mrs. John L. Hieftje of Muskegon, Ruth lived a full rich life. She loved education, graduating from Muskegon High School in 1945, and then Trevecca, Nazarene College of Nashville, Tenn., receiving her Th.B degree in 1954, and finishing her graduate studies at Western Michigan and Michigan State. Before her undergraduate degree Ruth worked for General Telephone Company of Muskegon from 1944-1950 and was the chief operator of General Telephone of Ludington from 1957-1961. She pastored the Sault Ste. Marie Nazarene Church plant from 1954-1956 and served as the assistant pastor/youth director of the Ludington Church of the Nazarene from 1956-1959. A lover of knowledge she was an educator most of her adult life in both the church and the public school teaching third grade in Holton from 1961-1963, fourth grade at McMillan Elementary School from 1963-1966, and serving the children of the Portland school system from 1966-1986. Ruth taught for a total of 25 years being inducted into the Honor Society in 1973 as a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society-Alpha-Upsilon-Chapter Alpha Iota. She also taught Sunday school for over 25 years and led numerous adult home Bible studies. Ruth impacted the lives of generations of children with her love for God and passion for learning. She was preceded in death by her sister Mary (Howard) Cooper, and her brothers John (Doris) and James (Elloise). She is survived by her sisters, Delores Smith (Bud) Hattis, Loretta (Lyndon) Coffery, and She will be remembered fondly by her nine nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and great nephews. A memorial service was held March 11 at Breakwater Church of the Nazarene (formerly First Church of the Nazarene) with her nephew, Dr. Glen B. Maiden officiating. Interment was at Lakeside Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to the Clock Life Story Funeral Home, Muskegon. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or First Church of the Nazarene.
