The Ionia Standard, Friday, April 10, 1908

The funeral of B. F. Higbee was largely attended from the home in Orleans, 
Friday afternoon, April 3.  The floral tributes were beautiful.  Rev. E. E. 
Branch officiated.

Mr. Higbee was born in Union Broome county, N.Y., Nov. 15, 1818, the youngest 
of the three sons of Erastus Higbee.  Early in 1838, Erastus Higbee came to 
Michigan from N.Y. and stopped in Oakland county, to visit Charles Broas, 
formerly his neighbor in New York.  From there they came to Ionia county, in 
search of land, reaching his place on section 36, Orleans, June 26, 1838, 
which from that time has always been the family homestead.

On July 4, 1841, he was married to Laura M. Goodwin., who was a true 
helpmeet.  Of seven children, five, one son and four daughters, survive.

Mr. Higbee united with the Baptist church of Ionia, Nov. 1, 1845, and was a 
regular attendant until the past four years, when growing disabilities 
prevented.  At the time of his death he was the oldest member of the church.  
Mr. Higbee was not only active in church work, but an earnest advocate of 
temperance, and every movement for the moral welfare of the community.

It is probable that Mr. Higbee realized that the end of his life was near, as 
only about six weeks before his death he related with care as to details the 
complete sotory of his early life, which was recorded by the family.

Mr. Higbee was able to be around the house until two days before the end 
came.  He passed peacefully away in the early morning of April 1, at the age 
of 89 years, 4 months and 16 days.  He leaves many relatives and a host of 
friends to mourn his death.
