Mrs. Higbee was born in Easton township in 1858 the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Curtis. In 1878 she was united in marriage to W. W. Bemis and continue to live in Easton. Four children were born to them, the youngest, Ray, died in 1926. Mr. Bemis’ death occurred in 1920, and later she married Chancellor Higbee and resided in Butternut until his death in 1931. Since then she made her home in Grand Rapids with her granddaughter, Miss Ila Thorpe, for a year and the remainder of the time has lived in Ionia with her daughter. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and an active worker in the Gleaners and Rebekah Lodge. Surviving are three children, Lynn Bemis, of Kinderhook; Mrs. Glenn Thorpe, of Ionia, and Ernest Bemis, of Ann Arbor; three brothers, Seymour Curtis, of Ionia; Melvin Curtis of Grand Rapids, and Harry Curtis, of Easton; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted from the Stebbins funeral home Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Rev. M.W. Duffey, pastor of the M.E. church will officiate. Interment will be held in the family lot at the Easton cemetery. -------------------- Funeral services for Mrs. Luella Higbee, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Glenn Thorpe, 106 East Lincoln Ave., Thursday afternoon following a week’s illness, were held from the Stebbins funeral home Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock with Rev. M.W. Duffey, pastor of the Methodist Church officiating. Bearers were Guy Connor, Elmer Cowan, Mose Holcombe and Frank McComber and music was rendered by Mrs. Thane Benedict and Mrs. Ray Colwell. Interment was at the family lot at Easton cemetery. Among relatives and friends from away attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bemis and daughter, of Ann Arbor; Linda Bemis, of Kinderhook; Mr. and Mrs. Ransleer Curtis, Mr. and Mrs. Flint Curtis, Miss Ila Thorpe, Melvin Curtis, of Grand Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Haight, of Lansing; Mr. and Mrs. Allen Tuttle and daughter, of Belding; Mr. and Mrs. Herman Bluemly and Mr. and Mrs. H.R. Huyke and daughter of Butternut; Dr. and Mrs. Culbertson, of Vickeryville; Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Curtis, Mrs. Sarah Goodwin, and Mrs. Nora Bishop, of Easton; Harry Curtis and family and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Curtis, of Kalamazoo; Mr. and Mrs. Robert White, of South Ionia, and Mr. and Mrs. C.I.
