With her passing went one of the most unselfish people known. Lydia was born on Jan. 10, 1915 in Racine, Wis., a daughter of the later John and Frances (Bogar) Kadlac. She was married to the late William Higgason on June 2, 1951 and relocated to Bay City. Preceding her in death was her husband, William; two brothers, Louie and William, and a sister, Mary. Surviving are daughters Marcia (Dave) Higgason of Bay City, Marianne Hellebuyck of Farmington and Patty (Marlin) Wingard of Eagle Harbor. Also, grandson Todd (Alicia) Wingard; step-grandsons Jeff (Holly) Wingard and their two children, Nicholas and Claire and Ryan (Brandei) Wingard. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. Lydia worked for Jockey Co. in Kenosha, Wis., and worked her way up to supervisor. After her marriage, she relocated to Bay City, where she worked for Wolverine Knitting Mills, retiring in 1970 to care for her disabled husband. After her husband’s passing on Jan. 3, 1995, Lydia lived from then to the present with her daughter Marianne in Holland and Detroit, and Patty in Ionia. In April 2010, she moved to Eagle harbor, to live with daughter Patty and son – in-law Marlin. Lydia was a voracious reader and was reading up until two days before her passing. She loved to cook and bake. Her happiest times were when family and friends were gathered around the table enjoying a good meal. She made the best gravy in the world and you wanted to drink it with a straw. Her grandson Todd held a very special spot in her heart as she was his “sitter” when he was growing up. While living with her daughter Patty, she fell in love with her two furry “grandkids”, Emmett the St. Bernard, (she called him Jumbo) and Manny the cat. At Lydia’s request her body was donated to the University of Michigan Anatomical Donation Program. Memorials may be directed to Asprius Keweenaw Home Health & Hospice, 311 6th St., Calumet, MI 49913 or the Copper Country Humane Society, P.O. Box 453, Houghton, MI, 49913. A celebration of Lydia’s life will be held in the spring. Please read a good book in her memory. The Erickson Crowley Funeral Home in Calumet is assisting the family with the arrangements.
