The Portland Observer, Thursday, March 23, 1914
W. J. High, a lifelong resident of Sebewa township, died last Thursday morning 
at his home one mile north of Sebewa corners, of Bright’s disease, having been 
hopelessly ill for the past three months.  The remains were laid to rest in 
Sebewa township cemetery Saturday afternoon, following funeral services at the 
late home conducted by Rev. A. E. Wynn of Sunfield.

Mr. High had spent his entire life on the 100-acre farm north of the corners 
where death ensued last Thursday morning.  He was born August 2, 1857, being 
in this 57th year at the time of his death. On December 14, 1879 he married 
Mary L. Merrifield, of Sebewa, a sister of W. W. Merrifield of Portland, who 
passed before him 20 years ago.  Two sons, Maurice High, of Dallas, Texas, and 
Harry High of Jackson survive this marriage, a daughter Myrtle, having died in 
infancy.

On June 2, 1896 deceased was married to Josephine A. Deatsman of Sebewa, who 
with the two sons survives.  There are also a number of half brothers.  Mr. 
High was of an industrious make-up and will be greatly missed by a large 
circle of acquaintances in Sebewa, formed during a lifelong residence in that 
locality.
