The funeral service for the late Robert Hill of Orleans was attended from the residence last Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. R. B. Chapman of Ionia. The singers were Mrs. Eugene Smith and Mrs. Harry Spencer and the pallbearers were the brothers, William, Thomas and Steven Hill, N. J. Clark of Coleman, and two nephews, Fred Hill of Sunfield and George Hill of Ionia. The burial was in the Higbee cemetery. The funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends, many of whom had known Mr. Hill for many years, and the large offering of flowers was evidence of the very high esteem in which the family and the deceased are held in the community. Robert Hill’s parents lived in England and when they embarked on the ocean trip to America in 1843, they were confronted with a sea voyage lasting 16 weeks. They came direct from New York to Orleans, Ionia county, and settled on the old farm which has since been with the family down through the years. Robert Hill was born in Orleans Dec. 15, 1843 on the farm where he spent his life. In 1869 he married Mary E. Lansing and to them were born three children, Carrie, who died in infancy, Nellie M., residing in Ionia, and Alvin, who is on the old homestead in Orleans. He was genial and companionable in his make-up and was greatly esteemed for his sense of honor. Mr. Hill began to fail about six years ago, ever since that time having been in poor health and a patient sufferer. He died on Wednesday, May 17, at the age of 72 years, five months and two days. His wife preceded him about ten years ago. The surviving family are three sisters and three brothers, Mrs. N. J. Clark of Coleman, Mrs. Anna Roberts of Entrican, Mrs. Mary Lyons of Remus, William and Stephen Hill of Ionia, and Thomas Hill of Orleans.
