Daniel J. Hill, Civil War Veteran, Answers Last Roll Call; Mrs. D. W. Lind, a Niece. One of the grand old men of Ionia county passed away Tuesday morning at 3 o’clock, when the demise of Daniel J. Hill, 87, pioneer resident of Boston township, occurred at the home of his niece, Mrs. D. W. Lind, 325 Lafayette street. He had been ill since last September from kidney trouble and had lived at the Lind home since his wife died, 18 months ago. The funeral was held on Thursday afternoon at 1 o’clock from his old home in Boston township and interment was made at South Boston cemetery. Rev. Fred Williams, pastor of Clarksville Congregational church, was in charge. A prayer service was held at the Lind residence, in charge of Rev. C. J. Kruse, before the body was taken to the homestead. The pallbearers Thursday were: Isaac Filkins, Charles Ayers, Ralph McDairmid, N. W. Stuart, Ray Lenhard and Jesse Hazen, friends of the deceased. He was born in Pittsfield, Mass., on May 12, 1837, and came to Ionia county when 18 years of age to live with his sister, Mrs. George H. Tucker, one of the early Boston township settlers. He enlisted in the Third Michigan Cavalry in 1861 and served for the duration of the Civil war. He was mustered out as a duty sergeant. During his service in the conflict, he forwarded home enough money to buy the eighty-acre farm he owned at the time of his death in Boston township. Following the war, he was married to Anne C. Haines of Boston township. He is survived by only a few nieces and nephews. He had been a member of the Saranac G. A. R. post until it disbanded a few years ago.
