Hill, 82, of Ionia, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born Jan. 7, 1920, in Lowell, the son of Art H. and Clara A. Bergin Hill. Mr. Hill married the former Beulah Hoople on June 29, 1940, at Lowell. He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and an honorary lifetime member of Ionia Knights of Columbus Council 944. He retired from Oldsmobile, Lansing, in 1974. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps, flying 57 missions in the South West Pacific. He earned a good conduct medal, an air medal with two oak leaf clusters, a distinguished unit badge and three bronze stars. Mr. Hill was an avid golfer and a member of the Archery Club. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Beulah; two daughters and sons-in-law, C.J. and Paul Karuntzos of Pleasanton, Calif. and Carolyn “Skeet” and Terry L. Slocum of Greenville; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Joseph G. and Deb Hill of Sugar Grove, Ohio, James L. Hill of Ionia and Jeffery W. and Deb Hill of Lowell; four grandchildren, Terry Slocum II, Scott Slocum, Heather Hill and Jason Hill; two sisters, Helen Layer of Lowell and Claradell Rewa of Dorr; and a sister-in-law, Valeta Redemsky of Lakeland, Fla. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Fr. Melvin Fox at 10 a.m. Saturday at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. The family will receive friends at Cook Funeral Home, Rich Street Chapel, today from 5 to 7:30 p.m. A rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. today.
