Born July 15, 1935 in Iron River,MI to Charles & Mary Hill. He was the last surviving of 9 siblings. Survived by his wife of 43 yeas, Marilyn Hill, his children Tina (Todd) Hileman, Diana Cook, & Gary (Jacquie) Hill from a previous marriage to Ida Hill. His family grew when he married Marilyn, gaining more children in Paula Wykes, Rita Pelot, Debbie(Andy)Clay, & Jake Dixon. Jerry was a graduate of Michigan Technological University in Civil Engineering & later the Univ. of Michigan on the behalf of the Michigan State Highway Department where he worked for 19 years. He was a registered professional engineer & certified as an ASNT level II in radiography, ultrasonic & magnetic particle testing. He was a Gold member of the American Welding Society for 61 years where he led & contributed to many committees establishing welding codes. He was chairman of the National Cooperative Highway Research Program & worked under contract with the Federal Highway Administration to write a training manual for welding inspectors. He had several reports on welding published in scientific journals & traveled all over the country putting on bridge engineering seminars. He was an expert t repairing steel highway brides with the heat straightening process & was a pioneer in his field. He was consulted on the 911 Memorial. Jerry & Marilyn lived in Tenn. for over 20 years whee they built their dream home. Moved back to Michigan in 2020 to be closer to family. Jerry was a man of God who valued his Catholic faith & shared with others. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting & fishing & fishing for brook trout in the Paint River. He also had a passion for raising chickens & gardening. He loved History & traveled visiting National Parks & Landmarks. A Mass of christian burial will be held at St.Anthony's Catholic Church, 3927 Jackson Rd, Saranac, on Wednesday, April 24th, 11:00 AM with father Michael Goodwin presiding. Luncheon to follow, Rite of committal at Mt.Calvary Cemetery in Wiliamston at 3:30 PM Visitation will be held at Lake Funeral Home, 158 Mill st, Saranac, on Tuesday from 4-7 PM with Rosary at 7 PM & 1 hour prior to services at the Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Faith Hospice of Grand Rapids, who provided excellent care to Jerry.
