Ionia Standard, 17 Sep 1897

Emerson Hinds, one of the early pioneers of Ionia county, died on Monday 6th 
inst., at his farm home, two miles south east of Smyrna.  His wife died seven 
years ago.  He leaves one daughter, Mrs. Cyrus Beadle, of Smyrna, and two sons, 
Morris of Dakota, and John, who worked the farm and was a kind and thoughtful 
son.  Deceased was 79 years of age, and was a patient sufferer for four years.  
His funeral took place Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock from the Smyrna Baptist 
church and the large congregation was a mute testimonial of the high regard in 
which he was held, for he was a loyal friend, a kind and sympathetic neighbor, 
and a man of many sterling qualities.  His aged brother, Philander Hinds, of 
Wood’s Corners, is the only surviving member of the family.
