One of the quiet, truly upright old men of our village was Mr. George Hines, a man highly respected by everyone, always had a pleasant word of cheer. For many years he and his splendid family have been a part of the wool and woof of our village life, always using their influence on the side of right in all village and community welfare. Mr. Hines, and his wife who passed away several years ago, were splendid Christian characters and were ready when the Master called them home. the lives of these people were a credit to the communities where they lived both in the rural pioneer days and since coming to this village. Mr. Hines knew of his approaching death and made all arrangements before his departure. He leaves two sons, Dr. P. R. Hines and Mahlon Hines, both of the village, with their families to mourn a loving and thoughtful father. Obituary George W. Hines was born in Richland county, Ohio, February 22, 1842 and departed this life February 7th 1925, aged eighty-two years, eleven months and sixteen days. He was the oldest of a family of seven children and endured the hardships of early pioneer days. At the age of fourteen years he moved with his parents to Noble county, Indiana, where he grew to manhood, assisting his father in clearing a new farm and providing a living for the family. As a young man he followed the carpenter trade in summer and taught district school winters. He was married to Sarah Cramer, September 26, 1867. After about two years of married life he moved to Michigan, locating on a farm on the north side of Sunfield village. This was then new and undeveloped territory which he helped to transform into productive farm land. In 1879 he traded his Sunfield farm for one in Benton township, near Charlotte. Here he lived until 1896 when he moved to Lake Odessa where he has since resided. While he lived in Benton township he was closely identified with the church and community, holding several offices of public trust. Farming was his favorite occupation, having owned farms in Sunfield, Benton and Odessa townships respectively. His wife preceded him in death fourteen years ago last June, since which time he has lived with his sons Perry F. and Mahlon E. of Lake Odessa. His health has been failing for several years but only recently was the seriousness of his condition apparent. He was converted about fifty years ago and for many years was an active member of the M. E. church but of late years had embraced the faith of the First Day Adventist. He spent much time in searching the scriptures which gave him hope and comfort in his declining years and final illness. He leaves to mourn their loss two sons, five grandchildren, a great grandchild, one brother and one sister, besides many friends and old acquaintances. The funeral was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Hines, Monday afternoon, Rev. F. H. Cramer spoke appropriately of the splendid life of the deceased using the text requested by Mr. Hines sometime before his death, Psalm 17:15. As for me I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied when I awake with thy likeness. The music was by Mrs. Thos. Johnson, George Kart and Mr. and Mrs. Goodemoot. Burial was at Lake Side. Those who attended the funeral from away were Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Kingman, Miss Dorothy Kingman, Mrs. George Upright, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Claflin, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Quantrell of Belding, Mr. and Mrs. Cleon Bayer and Manley Cramer of Mulliken.
