Marshall Hines, 57, World War I veteran and Ionia County Drain Commissioner, passed away Sunday at the Veterans hospital in Dearborn, where he had been a patient for about three months. He was born in Isabella county near Mt. Pleasant, May 29, 1898, son of John and Theresa (Bentler) Hines. William Baldaf, Sebewa township farmer was appointed deputy drain commissioner last week by the board of supervisors. He will serve the unexpired term of Hines, who was elected on the Republican ticket last November. Hines resided on a farm at Charlotte before moving to a farm northeast of Lake Odessa on Musgrove highway ten years ago. He was serving his second term as drain commissioner. He was a member of the Lakeside Grange and DaVenne Demaray Post No. 112 American legion. Surviving are his wife Grace, two sons, Hugh and Ralph, both of Grand Rapids; three brothers, Robert and Reuben of Mt. Pleasant, and Grover of Drain, Oregon; two sisters, Mrs. Herman Fritz, Grand Ledge and Mrs. Cora Hammond, of Columbus, Ohio and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 7 at Pickens chapel under the auspices of the American Legion post. Burial in Lakeside cemetery. Rev. A.J. Pitman at the Congregational church officiated.
