Mr. Hines was taken ill on Tuesday October 30th, and his end came fast from that time; previous to then he had been around as usual. The funeral was held from the M.E.Church in Saranac on Tuesday of this week, the service being conducted by Rev.Albert Johnson, and the remains of the old settler were laid at rest in the Saranac cemetery. The G.A.R. of Saranac, of which he was a member, escorted the remains of their brother to the grave, and performed their last sad rites as is their custom. Lewis D.Hines was born in Huntsbury,Geauga county, Ohio, on Dec. 12th, 1831, his parents being Abraham and Amanda Hines. He lived in that part of the state on a farm and was married to Miss Elizabeth Wells of Wellington, Ohio, on Feb 22, 1854. In 1861 he enlisted in the service of his country to serve in the war, and went to the front and served well until the close of the war. Then he returned to his little home and went to farming again, living there until in 1869; then he got the Michigan fever and came to this state settling on a farm in Berlin township. They lived there four years then moved to Saranac; lived in that village for five or six years, then moved back to Berlin township. His faithful companion suffered a stroke of paralysis in 1883, and died on July 19th, of that year in a hospital at Pontiac. Since that time Mr.Hines has been dividing his time between the farm in Berin and a home in Saranac, and making an occasional visit to the children in Ohio last winter being spent with the latter in that state. Efforts were made to get him to remain there, but he preferred to live in Michigan, and seemed most contented here among his many friends. He leaves four children, Charles T., H.M. and Lewis Hines and Mrs.Lydia Wheelock, all residents of Ohio.
