LEO HISCOCK Was Victim Of Shooting On Monday, September 16 Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, September 19, at the Dykstra Funeral Chapel, Saugatuck, for Mrs. Leo (Hilda) Hiscock, 56 of 843 W. Main Street, Ionia. Burial will be in a Saugatuck Cemetery. Mrs. Hiscock was fatally shot in the back of the head by her brother-in-law, Archibald G. O'Neal, 67, between 6:00 and 7:00 pm., Monday, September 16, as she was preparing supper in the kitchen of O'Neal's home in Saugatuck. O'Neal then went onto the porch where he shot himself. He died that night about 10:30 in the Holland Hospital. Mrs. Hiscock had accompanied O'Neal from Saginaw, where he had been a patient in the Veteran's Hospital to Saugatuck, so that he could complete some legal transactions. Investigating officers termed the shooting murder and suicide saying O'Neal apparently had become despondent over his own ill health and the recent death of his wife. Mrs. O'Neal died September 1, at the Ionia County Memorial Hospital. The double tragedy was discovered about 7:00 pm., when neighbors had noticed that lights in the house had not been turned on. A police officer investigated and discovered the bodies. Mrs. Hiscock apparently died instantly, but O'Neal was still living, and was taken to the hospital. Funeral service was held Thursday morning, September 19, for O'Neal at the Dykstra Funeral Chapel Mrs. Hiscock, who was employed as a receptionist in the office of Dr. Edmund Socha, had been a resident of Ionia for the past 15 years. She was a member of Queen Esther Chapter, OES. Her husband, Leo, had been in business in Ionia prior to his death about four years ago. She is survived by an uncle, Charles Plummer, of South Haven.
