Portland Observer, 21 Jan 1937

Sylvester Hissong, 69, died early Tuesday morning at his home on the Allen 
Hughes farm in Danby township, following an illness of several weeks.  Funeral 
services were held at the late home this afternoon, in charge of Rev. John H. 
Stewart.  Burial was made in Portland cemetery.

Mr. Hissong was born in Ohio and came to Michigan when a young man, residing 
for many years in this vicinity.  For some time he resided on Elm street in 
this village, leaving last fall to take up his residence on the Hughes farm.

Besides the widow he is survived by 11 children, Marian, of Pewamo; Emma 
Hoffman, of Sebewa; Eli, of Kalamazoo; Julia Rocka, of Portland; Seymour, of 
Kalamazoo; Irene Yerge, of Orange; Lueza Dockham, of Portland; Matilda Shilton, 
of Sebewa; Josephine DeGroft, of Sebewa; Agnes Kill, of Sheridan, and Joseph, 
of Portland.  There are 42 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
