The deceased was 54 years, 9 months and 21 days old.The immediate cause of death was la grippe. The funeral was held at the residence, two miles north of the village, Saturday,January 13th, Rev. D.E. Millard officiating. As the procession of mourners entered the village it was met by between forty and fifty member of Portland tent K.O.T.M.,who marched with the remains to the cemetery.At the grave Maccabee ritualistic burial service was performed b Rev. W.P.French, Commander Copenhaver and Past Commander Beden. A large concourse of friends attended the obsequies. Mr.Hitchcock had long been a resident of Portland.He was highly respected, and the bereaved family has the sympathy of all, The deceased carried $2,000 insurance in the Supreme tent of the Maccabees. His death was the first one to occur among the Maccabees since the lodge was instituted in Portland. W.Philander Hitchcock was born in Cataraugas ąCo., N.Y., March 20th, 1840. He was united in marriage to Miss Celia R. Whelpley, October 13th 1868, and moved to Portland about 40 years ago. His wife survived him.
