Fire Chief Hixson Dies at Age 71
Had Been a Member of the Department 50 Years and it's Chief for 27 Years.
Worked for Newman & Rice and Successors 48 Years.
Had Been in Poor Heath for Some Time; Funeral Held Tuesday Afternoon.

  Sumner H. Hixson, for 27 years chief of Portland fire department, died at his 
home in this village Saturday night, after a long period of ill health. He was 
71 last Thursday. Funeral services are to be held at the house Tuesday 
afternoon, Rev. John H. Stewart, officiating.
Mr. Hixson was born in Royalton, N.Y., and came to Portland with his parents, 
Mr. and Mrs. William Hixson when he was four years old. At the age of 18, he 
entered the employ of Newman & Rice, at the mill, continuing with that firm and 
their successors until two years ago - 48 years in all.
About 50 years ago, Mr. Hixson became a member of the fire department, 
continuing such up to the time of his death. He attended nearly all of the 
annual conventions of Michigan fireman and had been an officer of the 
association. 
Forty-eight years ago Mr. Hixson married Miss Flora Powell, who survives him. 
Their only child, Leon E. Hixson, died several years ago.  There are no brothers 
or sisters.
Members of the Fire department will act as bearers at his funeral.
