Hodgkins, 78, of 516 Townsend street, retired Ionia school teacher and principal, will be held Wednesday at First Presbyterian church at 2 p.m. Mrs. Hodgkins’ death was sudden and unexpected. She became ill at her home and was taken to the Ionia hospital by her son and was pronounced dead upon arrival. She was born in Mason November 4, 1882, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Bement, and came to Ionia in 1906 to teach school in the fourth ward. She was named principal of Emerson elementary school in 1928 and held the position until her retirement in 1953. She was a graduate of Eastern Michigan college at Ypsilanti. July 15, 1908 she was married in Ionia to John Hodgkins and had made her home here since. Mr. Hodgkins died April 1 of this year. Mrs. Hodgkins was a member of First Presbyterian church of Ionia, the Women’s association and Sarah circle of the church. For many years she participated in work in the Methodist, Baptist and Presbyterian church choirs. Active in many social and educational organizations, she was a member and past president of the Ionia Garden club, Camera club, Delta Kappa Gamma sorority and the Teachers club of Ionia, and was a former member of the DAR. As a member of Photographic Society of America she was extremely interested in photographic work and did a lot of children’s photography, and as a lover of plant life she was always anxious to help others with floral arranging and gardening. Near the end of her teaching career, Mrs. Hodgkins received a TV presentation of Freedom Foundation award. Survivors include a daughter, Frances of Ionia; a son, Richard Hodgkins of Greenville; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Rev. Wilfred G. Sawyier will conduct the service and interment will be at Sunset Memorial Garden Shrines. The body will be at Myers funeral home until it is taken to the church where it will lie in state from 1 until 2 p.m. A memorial is being established by the family in honor of Mrs. Hodgkins.
