Oct. 9, 2012 Lawrence S. Hoffman, 85, of Portland, passed away on Friday, Oct. 5, 2012. He was born on Sept. 3, 1927 in Ionia, the son of Gus and Vera (Houghton) Hoffman. Mr. Hoffman graduated in 1944 from Ionia High School, and was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. Lawrence retired from the Department of Corrections after 32 years of service. He was a skilled carpenter and wood worker for most of his life. He enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing, golfing, snowmobiling, going to the cabin, bowling, and Sunday morning coffee, doughnuts and euchre with his family. Lawrence was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving at the end of World War II. On Oct. 29, 1949 he married Laurine Huhn, and she preceded him in death on May 19, 2006. His brother, Vernon Hoffman, also preceded him in death. Surviving are his children, Neal (Colleen) Hoffman of Pewamo, William (Sharon) Hoffman of Portland, Barry (Lu) Hoffman of Portland, Barbara (Gary) Winowiecki of Sault Ste. Marie, Gregory (Karen) Hoffman of St. Johns, Christine (Jim) Surdenik of St. Johns, Constance (Christopher) Brown of Portland, Diana (Mark) Simon of Portland, Gayle (Tony) Thelen of Portland, and Lisa Hoffman of Grand Blanc; 33 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister-in-laws, Ruth Huhn and Elizabeth Huhn of Portland; numerous nieces and nephews. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Monday, Oct. 8, 2012 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Portland, with Rev. Donald Weber presiding. Rite of Committal will follow at Portland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Lehman Funeral Homes, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland. A Rosary will be prayed at 3 p.m. and a Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday.
