He was born in Hospers,Iowa, October 17, 1901, the son of H.John and Caroline G. (Hofland) Hoffs and was an Iowa high school graduate and from northwest Classical Academy of Orange City, Iowa in 1920. He received his AB degree from Hope College in 1924 and graduated from northwestern Medical School in Chicago in 1928 and served his internship at Butterworth Hospital,Grand Rapids. Dr.Hoffs came to Lake Odessa in 1929 where he practiced medicine and surgery for 40 years until he retired in December of 1968. He was serving as medical director at the Barry County Medical Care Facility, at the time of his death. Active in many civic and political affairs of the community he had served on the village council and six terms on the Lake Odessa school board of education and President for two years. He was one of the main organizers of the local Labor day Homecoming which is now the July 4th weekend fair and had served as president for five years. Dr. Hoffs was an active member of the Central United Methodist Church and Adult Fellowship o the church, an active and charter member of the Lions Club, which he served as club president in 1945. He was a member of Ionia Country club 40 years and had served as the president of the club in 1967. The doctor was chief of staff of the Ionia County Memorial Hospital when it was first completed and chief of surgery there for two years. He was on the medical staff of Pennock Hospital, Hastings and is past chief of staff and surgery. A member of the Barry county Medical Society, Ionia-Montcalm Medical Society, American Medical association and fo the Michigan State Medical Society, where he held an appointment on the Society committee of geriatrics. Dr. Hoffs married Alice Brower of Hamilton on March 31, 1927, who survives: also three daughters, Mrs.Lyle (Louise) Bartlett of Vickburg, Mrs.Robert (Carole) Bos of Westlake, Calif.,and Mrs. Thomas (Jayne) Cummings of Woodbury, Conn.: seven grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs.Daniel (Allie) Kluinstecker of Lake Odessa, Mrs.John (Caroline) Roetman, Mrs.Wilhelminia Wierks of Hospers,Iowa,and Mrs.Jake (Dena) Vandesteeg of Alta,Iowa, and a brother, Joe Hoffs of Hospers,Iowa. Dr. Hoffs reported at Pickens Funeral Chapel until Wednesday forenoon, then was taken to the Central United Methodist Church where funeral services were held Wednesday at 1:30. Rev. Marvin Zimmerman officiated with burial in Lakeside cemetery. Donations may be left at the Pickens Funeral Chapel for a Memorial in lieu of flowers.
