Hoge, 90, Hubbardston’s last veteran of the Civil war, who died at the home of his son, Albert. The Walter T. Roach post, American Legion, of Hubbardston had charge of the burial service in Westside cemetery. Mr. Hoge was born in Bellefontine, Ohio, Sept. 5, 1848, and enlisted in the Union army at Alton, Ill., September 10, 1864, serving with the 144th volunteer infantry, 11th army corps. He was a guard at the Alton military prison and was mustered out of service February 13, 1865. Typhoid fever contracted in the service left him in ill hearing the remainder of his life. He married Miss Julia Ann Weeks at Hubbardston, March 30, 1877. She died November 8, 1938. He was a member of O.H. Read post, GAR and for 35 years its quartermaster. He was a great gardener and his gardens were show places. For years his flowers were used to decorate soldiers’ graves.
