Holbrook was born at Muir, Michigan on February 8th, 1879. When he was four years of age he moved with his parents to Hubbardston, Michigan, where he spent his boyhood days. He began teaching school when 16 years of age and later graduated from the Belding High School. He attended the State Teachers College at Ypsilanti, from which he graduated in 1903. He spent one year as superintendent of school at Nadeau and two at Iron River in the Upper Peninsula. From there he went to Proctor, Minnesota, where for three years he taught and for two years was engaged in the lumber and building trade. The next 14 years were spent in the Prince Albert district in Saskatchewan, where he homesteaded and taught school. He then returned to Michigan and taught in Muir and Mayville. Desiring more education, he enrolled in Michigan State College in East Lansing and here he secured his B.S. and M.S. degrees. He also worked in the short course and agricultural engineering departments and received a certificate as an instructor in the Smith-Hughes work. For the past two years he has been teaching at Omer, Michigan. He was taken sick in the school room in the afternoon of April 11th and died of Angina Pectoris in the evening, aged 61 years, two months and three days. He was interested in school work and was a counselor and companion of young people, beloved by those who knew him. He was especially interested in out-of- doors sports and loved to fish, even on the day of his death inviting some relatives and friends to come to Omer to fish for smelt. He was married to Miss Myrtle Ellis of Ronald township, Ionia county, on June 28th, 1905. He is survived by the widow; one daughter, Mrs. Edward Yogus of Ann Arbor; one son, Frederick of Lansing; one brother, Harry; and two nieces, Misses Helen and Harriet Holbrook of Hubbardston, and one grandson of Lansing. He was a member of the Methodist church and the Order of Odd Fellows at Mayville. His funeral was held a the home of his brother Harry in Hubbardston and burial was in the family lot in the Westside Cemetery of Hubbardston. The Rev. John W. Broxholm of the Methodist church officiated.
