Holcomb, for more than three-score years a highly esteemed resident of Ionia county and city, crossed the dark river, at the home on East Main street in which he had taken such commendable pride since moving into it some two years ago, at 6 o'clock Wednesday evening, his last illness being of five weeks duration. He had been in feeble health for about six years and during the three weeks last past his condition was continuously very serious. Mr. Holcomb was born in New York state 68 years ago last December, and was brought to Ionia county when a year old, by his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Holcomb. They settled on a farm about a mile north of Ionia on the Steele road - a piece of that homestead becoming his home later. He was 18 years old when he enlisted in the First regiment, Michigan Engineers and Mechanics, Company E, and served throughout the war. On his return he settled again on the farm, where he lived until seven years ago. Fifteen years ago he married Mrs. Cora Cummins, who survives him. They had no children. He leaves three brothers and four sisters - Wm. H. Holcomb, who lives on a farm north of the city, Albert of Butternut, Ferris of Mt. Pleasant, Mrs. Bantan, Carson City, Mrs. Rose Preston, Mrs. Minty Wooden, and Miss Amelia H. Holcomb of this city. He leaves also two nieces, Mrs. Kitts of New York city and Miss Eva Klingeneburg, who is teaching in Portland. Their home has always been with him. Mr. Holcomb was a member of the G.A.R. and of the I.O.O.F., and these societies will furnish pallbearers for his funeral, which will take place at 3 o'clock on Sunday afternoon at the residence, 225 E. Main street. Rev. M.M. Callen, D. D. will officiate, and the Oddfellows' ritual will be used at the grave in Highland park.
