Holmes Passed Away Answered the Final Summons Monday Evening Had Been a Resident and Prominent Business Man of This City More Than Twenty Years. The death of Louis L. Holmes occurred at the family residence, corner of Bridge and Liberty streets, Monday evening. He had been unconscious for two or three days previous to his death and the family and friends knew that the end was near. The deceased was born in Windham, Ontario, in September, 1856, and when at the age of twelve years came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred W. Holmes, who settled on a farm in Orleans township. About twenty-two years ago he came to Belding and engaged in the grocery, drug and stationery business, later taking H.A. Connell into partnership and after they sold the grocery department to Robinson & Hudson the drug business was continued under the name of Holmes & Connell. He was also engaged in the clothing business in company with his brother, Lyman W. Holmes and after purchasing his brother’s interest the business was known as the Holmes Clothing Co. He retired from business about a year ago. He was a good business man, honest in his dealings and much respected by all, having very many friends in this city and vicinity. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity, Knights of Pythias and Maccabees, in which order he carried a beneficiary policy of $2,000. Sixteen years ago he married Miss Ella Townsend of Ionia and one son, Fred Holmes, was born to them, each of whom survive him. He also leaves his father and sister Carrie on the old farm and two brothers, Charles, near Ionia, and Lyman W. of this city. He was a nephew of Judge V.H. Smith of Ionia. The funeral was held today at the late home, Rev. G.F. Craig officiating. There were many evidences of the high esteem in which the deceased was held in the floral offerings sent in by friends and the orders to which he belonged. The remains were taken to Green cemetery in Orleans, where they were tenderly laid to rest in the family lot.
