Earnest Holmes While in Bathing July 4 Taken with Cramp and Drowns Before Assistance Can Reach Him. Eugene Holmes, son of Willard Holmes, aged 13 years, was drowned Tuesday morning in the river near the saw mill. He and another boy, Daniel Preston, went to have a swim about seven o’clock in the morning and after plunging in they attempted to swim across the river, the Holmes boy being ahead. Young Preston noticed that he was struggling and soon commenced sinking and immediately he swam to his assistance, catching his hand but was pulled under himself and was obliged to release his hold. The unfortunate lad soon disappeared from view and the waters enveloped him in death. The alarm was given as soon as possible and a crowd of people assembled to render assistance but it was nearly an hour before his father and one of the neighbors who had procured a boat found the body in several feet of water some distance below where it went down. Although Dr. Ferguson and others attempted to resuscitate him it was of no avail as the doctor pronounced life extinct on his first examination. It is said that the boy was a good swimmer and it is thought he must have been seized with a cramp. The parents and relatives are heart stricken over the sad affair. The occurrence made a very unhappy Fourth of July to them.
