Bennett lib@dogsbark.com April 17, 2010, 11:48 pm Owosso Argus HOLMES, EUGENE R.: OWOSSO ARGUS, MI, Thursday, November 11, 1920, front page: "EUGENE R. HOLMES, POST COMMANDER, TAKEN BY DEATH - Week's Illness Fatal to Civil War Veteran---Funeral Friday Afternoon---Eugene R. Holmes, veteran of the Civil War and commander of L. B. Quackenbush Post, G.A.R., died at his home, (435?) (?ohn) street, Wednesday noon at the age of 74 years. He had been ill only a week. A complication of diseases caused his demise. Mr. Holmes was born near Lyons, Mich., on October 28, 1844, and enlisted in the army for service during the Civil war, at the age of 16 years, and served one year and eleven months in Company B Eighth Michigan Infantry of Volunteers. He was married to Alma E. Saxton, 49 years ago, at Lyons and Mr. and Mrs. Holmes moved to Owosso 35 years ago. Three sons were born to the union, Louis E. Holmes of Clarksburg, W. Va.; Charles Holmes of North Hampton, Mass. and Fred L. Holmes of Stockbridge, Mich. Mrs. Holmes died in 1899 and Mr. Holmes was married in September, 1906, to Mrs. Sadie L. Curtis, of Lyons. She, with the three sons, and a sister, Mrs. Ella Johnson of Chicago, survive the deceased. Mr. Holmes was a member of Owosso lodge, No. 753 B.P.O.E., and Lyons lodge, F. & A. M. The funeral will be held at the home, Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Draper will officiate and burial will take place at Oak Hill cemetery. Mr. Holmes was a kind and genial man, liked by everyone who knew him. Since he gave up active work he had spent much of his time with "the boys" at the Elks' temple or at the Post hall, and thoroughly enjoyed his visits with them, as they did with him. He often told of his war experiences and many times the writer has seen him choke with emotion and tears flow down his cheeks as he told the sacrifices and the sufferings of some of his comrades in the war. Despite the fact that it all happened nearly 60 years ago the scenes of the war were as fresh in his memory as though they occurred only a few days ago. He was affectionately known to his host of friends as "Daddy" Holmes."
