Holmes was born at Shelburn, Chittenden, county, Vermont, March 28, 1821. Her parents removed to Oswego, New York, in 1832, and in 1839 removed to Ohio. While living in Seneca county, Ohio, she met Nathan Holmes to whom she was married on May 28, 1848, soon after which they removed to Grattan Center, Kent county, Michigan, where Mr. Holmes engaged in the milling business. For the past 17 years they have resided in Ionia county. Her death occurred on Friday, December 26, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. J. F. Tower in Ionia, and was quite unexpected, though she had been ill for some little time. One son, little Ira, has gone before her and awaits her coming. Three children survive her, Mrs. J. F. Tower, of Ionia, Mrs. C. W. Mercer, of Saranac, and E. C. Holmes of Hubbardston. She as one of six children of whom four survive her, R. W. Bellamy of Luther, Mich., E. S. Bellamy of Ionia, Joseph Bellamy of Toledo, Ohio, and Mrs. Elizabeth Wolfe of Grattan, Mich. Henry A. Bellamy, the fourth brother, died in May last at Toledo. Mrs. Holmes was a genial and companionable woman and beloved by all who became intimately acquainted with her. She as one of the “charter members” of the old settler “Washingtonian Society” of Grattan, Otisco and Greenville. This society was organized February 22, 1863 by a part of 22 old settlers who chanced to meet at the residence of one of their number and they have since kept up their annual meetings. Mr. and Mrs. H. have never missed being present at any one of its 20 meetings. She is the third of its original members to answer the call of the grim messenger, the other two being A. G. Stockholm of Eureka, and Mrs. Nelson Homes of Grattan and her death will leave a sad vacancy at their next meeting.
