She was born on Jan. 21, 1912 in Branch, Lake County Michigan the daughter of Martin and Victoria (Alexander) Honsowitz. She and her family moved to Lansing in 1918 and to Portland in 1930. Hovita graduated from Lansing Central in 1931. She worked at Salent & Salent Co. of Ionia from 1931 to 1936 and retired from Barley Earhart of Portland in 1976 with 40 years of service. She was preceded in death by her father, Martin in 1968; mother, Victoria in 1934; sisters, Alice in 1965; Lucille in 1988; brothers, Martin, Jr. in 1973, Ardis in 1975, and Thomas in 1978. Hovita is survived by her devoted sister Mary Jane Honsowitz with whom she shared her life. Mary Jane and others enabled her to enjoy her home and family. Those family members shared in Hovita’s joy, humor, companionship and generosity. Also surviving are her brother, Hugh (Betty) Honsowitz and sister Sophia Lennemann; niece Hovita (Quinton) Smith and their children, Megan, Jennifer and great-great niece Jordyn Smith; nephew Scott (Tina) Conner-Wellman and their children, Alex and D’Laney Conner-Wellman; nephew Tim (Becky) Wellman and Alan Hensley; nephew Forrest (Nora) Wellman; brother-in-law Forrest (Glenna) Wellman; 17 nieces and nephews; 40 great-nieces and nephews; and 23 great-great nieces and nephews. Services were conducted by the Rev. Scott Otis, Pastor of the Portland United Methodist Church May 2 at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland with Interment following at Portland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. For bringing joy to the lives of the people you have touched - you are admired and honored. For all the warmth and love you have unconditionally given - you will never be forgotten. We will share “Vita” stories with our children and grandchildren. You will live on in all of us. We have been blessed to have you with us for all of our years. We love you, Vita.
