Hooker, who died at Lowell a few days ago, always claimed to be the first white man to locate in Saranac, and the claim was never successfully controverted. He came to Saranac in April 1837, cutting the first tree and building the first log cabin in the wilderness. He was also the first postmaster of the town. He made the trip from Lansing in a canoe, his former home having been Howell.
