On Friday Dec. 9, 2011, Trudie joined her husband in their everlasting home. Born Jan. 10, 1912 in Rural Darke County, Ohio, Gertrude Collins was the third child of a family with six children. She died one month and one day short of her 100th birthday, having lived for the past eight years in Lansing, and the previous 50 in Ionia. She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles; her daughter Barbara; parents and three sisters and brothers-in-law. Her life in Union City, Ind., and Ionia was spent as a mother and wife, and active member of the First Methodist Church, a Girl Scout leader and Sunday School teacher. She set an example for her family by reading the Bible daily. Trudie was a great cook and hostess for many friends after golf games or evenings of card playing. She and Charles spent 14 winters in Florida, most of them in Destin where they met new friends on the beach. She will be remembered as a family person who started an annual reunion of her sister’s and brother’s families over 50 years ago, a reunion that continues in June at Pokagon State Park in northern Indiana. She is survived by her daughter, Jane Smith (Jim) of grand Ledge; five grandchildren; Marilyn Bohn, Dan Stone (Colleen), Michael Stone (Kim), Julie Smith and Jenifer DeWaard (Michael); eight great-grandchildren; and Zoe, a great-great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Ionia with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. She will be interred in Greenville, Ohio. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Ionia. Arrangements by Lake Funeral Home in Ionia. Online condolences may be made at www.lakefuneralhomes.com.
