He was surrounded by his family, who adored him, as he left this life for a better life in heaven. Philip was born on September 17, 1942 to Russell and Geraldine Hoople, also of Ionia. Russell was the manager of Van's paint store, which he later purchased and changed the name to Jerry's Paint Store. Phil went to work for his dad in 1955. This is where he learned how to sell wallpaper and paint, as well as fix windows and make beautiful picture frames. His father taught him how to be good to his customers so that they would want to come back for many future purchases. Phil became a partner in the business. Then, with the passing of his father in 1967, became co-owner with his mother. In 1973, Phil and Kathy purchased the store in entirety and renamed it Phil's Quality Wallpaper and Paint. This continued to be a successful business, and was sold to the current owners of the paint store in 1997. Phil attended Ionia High School where he graduated in 1960. He was a gymnast and played football, where he was an all-state offensive guard and helped to take the Bulldogs to the top class B state championship. He and Kathy (Taylor) were high school sweethearts who later married on November 11, 1961. Phil always worked hard for his family and at his business. He had a passion for his hometown too. During his life he served as a member and past Master on two occasions of the Belding-Ionia Masonic Lodge #355. He was a devoted member of Shiloh Community Church and he loved his church family as well as his church golf league. He was even a frequent volunteer at the Ionia Theater. He also enjoyed being a husband, a father, and a grandpa the most. Phil will be greatly missed not only by his family, but by countless friends whose lives he has touched throughout the years with his humor, strength, generosity, kindness and courage. Phil is survived by Kathy, his loving wife of 42 years, and their three children. Oldest son, Marc and his wife Barb; daughter, Marceille (Hoople) Vander Tuin and her husband Dan; and his youngest son, Matthew and his wife Lori; and sisters, Earlene (Joe) Nunes of Melbourne, Florida and Pat (Bill) Randolph of Jackson. Phil will be lovingly remembered as "Grandpa" by his ten grandchildren: Christian Petersen; Katie, Tina and Brandon Hoople; Chelsea, Katie and Martin DeGrate; Zachariah and Abraham Vander Tuin; and Caleb Jones. Visitation with the family will take place at Shiloh Community Church on Friday beginning at 10 a.m. followed by the funeral service beginning at 11:30, given by Pastor Ken Harger. A luncheon will be provided after the conclusion of the service. Cremation has already taken place and a private burial will take place at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Shiloh Community Church and Hospice of Michigan. Arrangements by Lake Funeral Home in Ionia.
