On December 9th, after nearly eight weeks in Pennock, Spectrum-Butterworth, and University of Michigan Hospitals, Betsy lost the battle to heal her lungs and went to be with God. Betsy is survived by her parents, Doug and Peg; her older brother, Andy; her grandparents, Bill and Muriel Newman of Royal Oak, MI, and Ross and Billie Horwood of Ionia, MI; and numerous friends and family. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Anton Hoort. Betsy touched lives in the Lakewood area, in Kalamazoo, in Scotland, and anywhere her sassy smile and sharp tongue brightened a room. Betsy loved her friends and family, history, reading, and living life to its fullest. She carried each of these passions with her to Kalamazoo College where she was a senior history major with plans to work in the educational department of a museum. Betsy has previously worked at Kalamazoo Valley Museum and The Grand Rapids Public Museum where she shared her enthusiasm for learning and history with children. Her fondness for history led her to a unique job where she performed ongoing archival work for a Kalamazoo family. Betsy also became an important part of many families while babysitting children, whom she loved and considered her special little friends. Her smile and compassion also touched many people and their pet’s lives during the time she spent working at the family veterinary clinic in Lake Odessa. Betsy’s family and friends would like her to be forever remembered for her stubbornness, her intelligence, her smile and carefree attitude, her open and honest personality, her quick wit, her ability to relate to anyone, and the absolute love and compassion she showed those she cared for. Not often do people get to leave this world truly aware of their impact, but over Betsy’s seven week battle to heal her lungs, she was able to witness the love of her family, friends, and the many communities she had become a part of. A time of visitation with Betsy’s family will be held at the Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa on Wednesday, December 14 from 5-8 p.m. and on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A service to celebrate Betsy’s life and her Homegoing will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the Lakewood United Methodist Church (10265 E. Brown Road, Lake Odessa). The family has suggested that memorial contributions may be made to the Freeport, MI Public Library, or the Kalamazoo Valley Museum.
