October 21, 2023 HOORT James Hoort, age 83, went to his Heavenly Home October 16,2023. He was married to the love of his life Carol for 47 years. Jim was preceded in death by his father and mother August and Jeanette Hoort, and his sisters Joyce Buning, Marry DeKoekKoek, and Phyllis Hoort and great granddaughter, Everly. He is survived by his wife Carol, 5 children Michael (LaTonya)Hoort, Michele (Mark) Witbeck, Brian (Nicki) Hofkamp, Melissa (Scott) Champine, and Matthew Hofkamp, his grandchildren Christopher (Heidi), Angus (Jessica), Emily (Justin), LaTaysha (Alex), Aryn (Brandon), Anika (Katie), Megan(Robert), Stephen (Kelsey), Kaylee, Alexis, his great-grandchildren Angus, LaTayana, Logan, Colton, KyeLynn, Owyn, Cora, Joey,Hudson, Valentina, Alexandria and Camden and sisters Janice DenBesten and Eileen (Henry) Hofstra. Jim had a very strong work ethic earned growing up on his family's dairy farm.He was always willing to lend a helping hand. Jim had a knack for making friends feel like family. He loved his blended family. The word step was not in his vocabulary, all were his. He was a skilled carpenter and was known for his wooden Christmas ornaments.Jim enjoyed playing softball, golfing, traveling and camping with his family.He loved the putt-putt sound of old John Deere tractors. He was often seen sitting on his front porch drinking a cup of coffee. He loved the Spartans, He was a beloved member of the LeValley United Methodist church and enjoyed singing bass in the choir. Jim worked at the Richard A. Handlon Correctional Facility for 30 years. After his retirement, he worked in the treasury office at the Ionia Free Fair for 16 years. Jim has been cremated and there will be a private family service.In lieu of flowers, Jim had requested donations be made to the Ionia FFA or LeValley United Methodist church.Arrangements cared for by Lake Funeral Home in Ionia.
