Hoover, age 92, of Ionia and formerly of Portland, passed away on Thurs., Mar. 10, 2005. She was born on September 11, 1912 in Westphalia the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Luckenbach) Blundy. Mrs. Hoover was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Portland and SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ionia. She was a founding member of the Red Hat Society in Ionia. Along with her husband, Frank, she owned and operated four restaurants in Portland at St. Johns. Vera enjoyed being with her family, playing cards and bingo, and was active with the Ionia Co. Commission on Aging. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank, daughters Norma Jean and Patricia Gilbert, brothers Albert, Norman, Leonard, and Edward Blundy, sisters Paulene Belen, Laura Kennedy and Dorothy Bishop. Surviving are her sons, Frank Dennis (Brenda) Hoover, Jeffrey (Lisa) Hoover both of Ionia; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and anyone who needed a grandma, mom or best friend. That’s the way she was. Also surviving are sisters June Hoffman of Vickeryville and Viola Thelen of Portland and many friends at Pine Vista. The mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Tues., Mar. 15, 2005 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Portland with Rev. Larry King presiding. Rite of Committal will be in Portland Cemetery in the spring. The family will receive friends 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Monday, at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland. A scriptural Wake Service will be held at 8 p.m. For those wishing, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society-Relay for Life or Ionia Area Hospice in memory of Mrs. Hoover. A special thank you to Dr. Doyle Calley and the staff at Ionia County Memorial Hospital and everyone at Heartland Healthcare Center.
