The Portland Observer, Tuesday, September 17, 1878
Very sad result of that fatal disease, diphtheria, have taken place at the 
house of Mr. Reuben Hopkins, three miles west of this village.  A few days 
since a little grandchild of Mr. Hopkins, Mr. L. M. Redfield’s child, died 
with the disease, and on Saturday an older child of Mr. Redfield’s also died 
with the same disease.  The disease did not stop having robbed the household 
of its children but attacked the older members and last week Mrs. Redfield, 
the mother of the children, and Miss Flora Hopkins, a young lady 22 years of 
age, who was stopping at Mr. Hopkins’, came down with the disease and 
yesterday the bell in the M. E. church steeple tolled the sad news of the 
young lady’s death.  Mrs. Redfield, we understand, is not expected to 
recover.  Miss Hopkins was a granddaughter of Mr. Alva Hopkins, of the 
northern part of this township, and was not a relative of the Mr. Hopkins 
where she was stopping, but had been teaching school in that district and was 
stopping there temporarily, her parents both being dead.  She as an estemable 
young lady, much beloved by all who knew her, and her untimely death has cast 
a gloom over her large circle of acquaintances.  The remains are to be buried 
today and the funeral services will take place at the M. E. church, in this 
place, next Sunday morning.  

Since the above was in type we learn that Mr. Hopkins’ daughter, Ella, and 
another of the Redfield children are down with the disease.
