IONIA- Edith Marie Hopkins, 98, former Ionian, died Wednesday in Grand Rapids.

She was born in Easton Township on Jan. 29, 1895, the daughter of Eugene and 
Etta Flemming Strong. She married Arthur Hopkins in 1912 in Ionia.

She was a lifetime member of Zion United Methodist Church where she taught 
Sunday school for 62 years. She was a member of South Ionia Friendship Club, 
and was a Gray Lady Volunteer at Ionia County Memorial Hospital for 18 years.

She is survived by one daughter, Ruth VanHouten of Kissimmee, Fla., one son, 
Warren Hopkins of Bandera, Texas, 14 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 
several great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Arthur in 1959, one son, Jack Hopkins, 
one grandson, Jerry VanHouten; one daughter, Maida Lancaster; three sisters, 
Maida Langford, Lena Strong and Jessie Blakeslee; and one brother, Robert 
Strong. 

Funeral and committal services will be held at the Cook Funeral Home Friday at 
2 p.m. with the Rev. John Poston officiating. Interment will be in Easton 
Cemetery in the spring.

The family will be at the funeral home Thursday from 2-4 and 7-8:30 p.m.

A memorial has been established for the Michigan Veterans Facility Chapel, in 
care of the funeral home.
