Coroner Richard Hull ruled death due to a heart attack. A lifelong resident of Portland he was born October 2, 1931 and was a carpenter by trade. He was also a veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; four sons, Darrell, Brian, Allen and Gary Hoppes, at home; two stepsons, Gary Martin of Muir and Gerald Martin of Portland; two step-daughters, Mrs. Judith Anthony of Howell and Mrs. Mary Lou Patrick of Muir; two grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. Estella Meyers, Mrs. Wilma Quigley, Mrs. Doris Beard and Mrs. Lorraine Putnam, all of Portland and Mrs. Marlene Nile of Minnesota; four brothers, Merlin, Marvin and Charles, all of Portland and James of Lansing. Funeral services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic church of Portland, Fr. Joseph Malewitz will officiate and interment will be at Portland cemetery. Rosary will be Sunday at 8 p.m. at Neller funeral home in Portland.
