Dr. DuBois of Grand Rapids was called to perform the operation finding the trouble much more serious than was expected. The news of his death proved a shock to his many friends and relatives who had hoped that the operation would prove successful and beneficial. The deceased was the son of the late Decker B. Hoppough and Lydia Hoppough of Smyrna. He was born in Canadice, Ontario county, New York, July 29, 1852 and came with his parents to Otisco at the age of eleven years. After working on the old farm for a number of years, he went into business with his brother, George Hoppough, in Smyrna, remaining there until his removal to North Dakota on a homestead near Laramore, where he resided for fourteen years. Mr. Hoppough returned to Michigan twenty years ago last April and settled on the farm south of Cook’s Corners. “Deck” Hoppough, as he was familiarly called, had a host of friends and possessed a jovial, cheerful and hopeful nature. He was ready at all time to assist his friends and bear his share of the burden that fell to him. He and his wife have sang for many a social and fraternal gathering and at funeral services. He was a good friend and neighbor, a loving father and husband and always the life of the family gatherings. Before going west he married Miss Lizzie Campbell, who survives him and, also, three sons, Charles, Ward and Fayette. Mr. Hoppough also leaves four brothers, George, Frank, Clark and Mark, all of this county, and four sisters, Mrs. Hattie Moe of Smyrna, Mrs. Carrie Coleman of Kinisely, Kansas, Mrs. Addie Hall of Lansing and Mrs. Alice Peterson of Smyrna. The funeral was held at his late home Sunday afternoon, Rev. A. J. Blair, preaching the sermon, with the burial at the Smyrna cemetery, under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity, of which Mr. Hoppough was a loyal member. Robert Olds, master of the lodge, gave the ritualistic work at the burial service in an impressive manner. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in the township, more than 150 Masons being present.
