Mr. Hoppough was down town Monday morning, but had not been feeling as well as usual, and he remained home Tuesday. Wednesday morning he was worse, and remained in bed until his condition took a sudden critical turn, and a physician hastily summoned, reached his home at about the same time that death came. Mr. Hoppough was born in Otisco township on the farm where he lived for 46 years. He came to Ionia 14 years ago to reside, and in 1917 was elected sheriff of the county, a position which he held for two terms. In recent years he has been in charge of highway construction camp work gangs for the state, and has also bee employed on highway work by the county. For the past two years he has been nightwatch in Ionia. He was at the time of his death 60 years of age. Mr. Hoppough was all his life a stalwart republican, and was active in republican activities in his township, and in the county. It was a coincidence that his death occurred on the date of the Ionia county republican convention, held Wednesday, as he has in the past many times been one of the most active and influential delegates in his party’s county gatherings. During his service to the county and to the city in various capacities his work has been characterized at all times by faithful devotion to his task. He was a hard worker, and never spared himself when there was a duty to perform or work to do. In fraternal circles he was also active and prominent, being a thirty-second degree Mason, a life member of the consistory, and a member of all lodges in Masonry, the blue lodge, chapter council and commandery. He was also one of the oldest members of the Ionia Elks, and a member of the Maccabees. He leaves the widow, and five children, Mrs. Fred Christensen, of Grand Rapids; Eugene Hoppough, of Orleans; Mrs. Peter VandenVoord, Grand Rapids, Mrs. William Krebbs of Grand Rapids, and Marjorie, at home.
