Gardner, in Lyons after an illness of a little over a week from asthma of the heart. She was tenderly cared for by her daughter and three sons, until the end came peacefully. Matilda Nickerson, daughter of J.C. and Sarah Nickerson, was born in Nova Scotia May 25th, 1853, and died February 14th, 1920, aged 66 years, 9 months and 20 days. When quite young the family moved to Canada, and when she was fourteen years of age came with her parents to Michigan, settling on a farm three miles east of Palo. July 4th, 1879, she was united in marriage to Francis M. Hornbeck of Bloomer, Montcalm county, who departed this life in 1894. To them were born four children, all of whom survive: Charles A., of Prentice, Wis., Harry C., of Milwaukee, Wis., Daniel E., of Detroit and Mrs. H. F. Gardner of Lyons. In 1888 Mr. and Mrs. Hornbeck united with the Baptist church at Palo, and in 1904 when she moved to Lyons transferred her member ship to the Baptist church here, where she has since lived and been an active member of the local church. Besides the four children, she is survived by a brother, Thomas Nickerson, of Crystal, nine grandchildren an done great-grandchild. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the home of her daughter, conducted by Rev. H.A. Halverson. Music was rendered by Mesdames W.A. Grant and A.E. Bradt, with Miss Ethelyn Ashley at the organ. Interment in the Lyons cemetery. Relatives from away who attended the funeral were: Chas. A. Hornbeck of Prentice, Wis., Harry C. Hornbeck and daughter, Mildred, of Milwaukee, Wis., Daniel E. Hornbeck of Detroit, Mrs. Seymour Curtis and Mrs. John Nicles of Grand Rapids.
