The Greenville Independent, Wednesday, April 16, 1902

Mrs. Rubie Burke Hornig was born in Ionia Co., Mich., Nov. 10, 1876.  She came 
to Greenville April 1, 1882, where she lived the remainder of his life with 
the exception of two years spent in Illinois teaching school.

She was converted when about eight years old and was for some years a worthy 
member of the Baptist church of this city.  At the time of her death, April 8, 
1902, she, with her husband, Mr. George Hornig, were both members of the 
congregational church and highly esteemed for the consistency of their 
Christian lives.

Rubie was the youngest daughter of Charles and Amelia Burke, who with the two 
surviving sisters and the husband and little one, left in its young life 
without a mother, have the most tender sympathy of the whole community.  Her 
loving and helpful disposition was remarkable.  In the home and elsewhere she 
was never happier than when doing something for others’ comfort and happiness.

Doubtless hers was a perfected Christian life.  The Savior said, concerning 
the work o f husbandry in this world: “When the fruit is brought forth 
immediately he putteth in the sickle because the harvest is come;” and he 
said: “So is the kingdom of God.”

Mrs. Hornig was a graduate of the Greenville High School of the class of 
1896.  She was not only a consecrated Christian but one possessed of a 
cultivated mind.  Those who knew her best had reason to love her most.  Her 
pastor, Rev. A. B. Curtis, officiated at her funeral, assisted in the service 
by Rev. D. E. Hills.
