James Horrocks Dies Suddenly

Had Been a Resident of Ionia Township for Last Thirty-Five Years.

James Horrocks, aged 81 years, died at his home at Prairie Creek, Tuesday 
afternoon.  Mr. Horrocks had not been feeling well for some time but was 
confined to his bed only since Thursday. 

He leaves four children, Mrs. Dan Gibbs, of Lyons, Mrs. F. D. Varnum, of 
Petoskey, Mrs. Dora? Schleinz, of Walloon Lake, and James of Prairie Creek.  He 
also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Emmons of Ionia and Mrs. Flora 
Entwhistle of Patterson, N. J.  He had eleven grandchildren and four great-
grandchildren.

Mr. Horrocks was born April 1, 1864 in Leigh parish, Lancastershire, England, 
and was married June 3, 1855 to Miss Marian Penkthman in Lady Huntington 
church.  They came to America in 1865, going to Pennsylvania.  The following 
year they came to Ionia and settled in Ionia township near Lyons.  There they 
lived for … [NOTE: several missing lines]… the death of Mrs.  … employed in the 
…  Mr. Horrocks often recalled that she wove the particular piece of silk that 
went to make the queen’s dress worn by the mother of the present king at her 
marriage.  Mr. Horrocks for many years has followed the weaving of rugs and did 
this work well on his loom in his home.  He was well known throughout Ionia and 
universally respected.  His interesting stories of England and his quaint 
manner of expressing himself with the sterling quality of his citizenship 
endeared him to all who knew him.

The funeral service will be held from the home Thursday morning, Rev. C. E. 
Hoag officiating; burial in Oak Hill cemetery.
