Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Harris of Lowell. Mr. Hotchkiss was born in Oswego county, New York, March 23, 1836. At the age of 13 years he moved with his parents to Loraine county, Ohio, where they made their home for three years, then coming to Michigan they located on a farm near Woodland, Barry county. On July 17, 1859, he was united in marriage to Betsy Houghton, of Woodland, who departed this life Sept. 26, 1916. To this union were born four children, three of whom survive him. Mrs. Walter Blakeslee, of West Lowell, Mrs. Cora Tallant of Lowell, and one son Edwin, who lives on the old farm. At the time of his marriage he purchased forty acres of land when they farmed until the second year of the Civil War, when he enlisted on Aug. 9, 1862, in Company A., 21st regiment. He was soon sent South and fought in the Army of the Cumberland and later was with Sherman on his march to the sea, serving gallantly, until he was honorably discharged at the close of the war in 1865. On his return home he sold his farm in Woodland and purchased an 80 acre farm in Boston township, Ionia county, where he lived until his death. For six months he has been a patient sufferer, and all that loving hands could do was done for him. He was a kind and loving father and always ready to lend a helping hand which loss will only be felt as time goes on. Besides his children he is survived by one brother E. H. Hotchkiss, of Council Grove, Kansas, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Father, thou art sweetly resting Here, thy toils and cares are over Pain, sickness, death and sorrow, Never can distress thee more.
