Piper, 68, was born in Medina, Ohio, January 2, 1856, and passed away at her home Sunday afternoon, February 10. When 10 years old she came to Michigan and settled on what is now the Joseph Wacha farm near Orleans. She taught school for many years in Ionia and Montcalm counties. April 12, 1884, she married James P. Cook, of Lewis Center. He died October 27 of that same year. February 24, 1886, she married Addison Houghton, who with their daughter, Edna, the only child of that union, survive. She also gave a mother's care to Mr. Houghton's two children by a former marriage, Frank, of Jackson, and Mrs. Arthur Rich of Sheridan. She was for many years a member of the Church of Christ at Woodard lake. Her faith in God never faltered. Besides her husband, daughter, and stepchildren she leaves one sister, Mrs. William Comstock, of Sears, and three brothers, Charles whose address is unknown, Frank, of Shiloh, and Harry, of Sheridan.
