Houghton, 85, of 904 Second St., died Jan. 11 at his home. He was born Aug. 9, 1895 in northern Michigan, the son of Cynthol and Ora (Priest) Houghton. He lived most of his life in the Lake Odessa area, and attended schools in Barry County and Lake Odessa High School. He married Opal Strong in 1916 in Clarksville. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War I and was a member of the Lake Odessa VFW. He was an ordained minister of the United Brethren Church, and he and his wife served as missionaries in Africa for three years. He was also a follower of the world-wide Church of God for the past several years. He farmed, worked for the Ionia County Road Commission and was a well known carpenter in the area for many years. Surviving are his wife, Opal; and one nephew, Allan Houghton of Curran, Mich. Services will be held Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. from the Pickens-Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa, with Pastor William Miller officiating. Burial was in Lakeside Cemetery.
